Should we care where 5G came from?

In certain conversations edge computing is often mentioned with 5G and references 5G’s capabilities. 5G enables edge computing. Having knowledge of what the fifth generation can do is great, however a greater appreciation can be realized when you understand the journey from radio to 1G to 5G, and how it all works. Further understanding where this technology came from can help you become a better-informed user and possibility an improved innovator. Module one, lecture topic 4 from the course lecture spoke of radio waves and explained the frequency ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, and helped illustrate how waves can transmit. The technology from a radio to 5G is different but the concept of the “waves” is the same. When we grasp the origins of a technology, we can better understand how to use it and develop it further, making it possible for us to take advantages of such applications like edge computing.

This blog really explained the capabilities of 5G to me. Typically I really struggle with understanding how technology works and what it is used to do; I am just really good at using the technology I am given. This blog really highlights how radio waves are important in transmission of waves, and how that concept is applicable to 5G. It is really amazing to understand why it is important to know about 5G in our current day and age. To improve this blog I would recommend adding a real life example. You could possibly talk about how 5G has affected our forms of communication or ways of work. That could really add to your blog! Wonderful job!

  2. I think it's so important to note how important 5g is and how we've gotten here from radio. Especially with 3G shutting earlier this year to make way for newer and faster 5G networks. They began to shut down 3G, phase it out by cutting off phones and older technology due to new modern technology being capable of so much more now. It's less efficient than 4G or 5G. It makes way for more advanced series showing how quickly we are developing.

  3. Excellent blog post, Andrew. I feel that this post helps the reader find a greater appreciation for understanding 5G and can influence readers to dive deeper into the subject. The majority of us definitely take 5G for granted and don't truly appreciate the journey that it took and where it all began.

  4. Hello Andrew,

Nice blog about the evolution of media up until the 5G. I would add more detail by explaining all of the generations that led to the final updated one we have now. Thanks!

  5. Hey Andrew! I think this post helped me understand more of 5G and technology in general which was cool so over all a great understanding

  6. I think as a generation that had very basic tech and immediately got thrown into what we have now so quickly we never really stop to think what exactly 5g is and how quickly we're advancing to new tech. I agree that we don't take enough time to appreciate the evolution from radio to 1g to the journey to 5g. It's cool to learn how they technology of radio and 5g is the same but evolved.
